This fall St. Nicks Alliance Teen Action participants Richie Fabian, Shadee Flores and Jeremiah Jones were the first high school students in the ISCP Apprenticeship Program. They worked with Joan Mitchell Foundation Artist-Teacher Dave Eppley to learn about works of public art, local galleries and art organizations, and to design and create their own site-specific vinyl pieces. Each student was also paired with an ISCP artist assisting in all parts of the process of creating art in the studio and preparing for exhibitions.
Richie worked with Josh Greene (US), Shadee with Balam Bartolome (Mexico), and Jeremiah with German performance artists Lotte Lindner and Till Steinbrenner (Germany). Jeremiah and Shadee also assisted Lars Laumann (Norway). Apprentices tasks varied from research to performing to educating the artists about the lives of NYC high school students.
Guided by Eppley, apprentices looked at a wide range of contemporary art to gain an understanding of the site-specific genre. They sketched and studied public areas at ISCP, creating proposal drawings for approval. The works throughout the common space attempt to activate and arrest the otherwise normal appearance of the space.
This program is a collaboration between St. Nicks Alliance Teen Action Program, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and ISCP.
